Equipment & Controls, Inc. Partners with Peoples Gas to Create Eternal Flame Monument at PPG Paints Arena

Equipment & Controls, Inc. was honored to partner with Peoples Gas in the creation of the eternal flame monument at PPG Paints Arena, the home of the Pittsburgh Penguins. ECI developed the piping, control system and burner management system that will allow safe ignition, control and real-time monitoring of the flame.

The system ECI designed especially for this monument is a unique use of the process control and automation solutions typically installed on gas-producing well pads.

“This was a unique application using components that our technicians typically install at many of our gas accounts,” said Jim Neville, Vice President, Oil & Gas, ECI. “Our team really enjoyed this challenge. Our process control and automation solutions are usually applied to larger scale industrial settings such as manufacturing plants, and oil and gas facilities, including the shale plays here in Western Pennsylvania. The Peoples Gas eternal flame monument was a great opportunity to showcase our solutions in a more consumer-focused environment.”

The internal system includes ASCO safety shutoff valves, Fisher pressure regulators, and Enardo flame arrestors to safely transport natural gas to fuel the flame. Also used is a Platinum burner management system and an Emerson FloBoss control system with an operations panel inside the arena. ECI engineers designed, developed, built and tested the system in their Monessen, PA, facility.

This will become a community monument – shining brightly to welcome the people of Pittsburgh to the Peoples Gate at the PPG Paints Arena.
