Intelligent Staging

Intelligent Staging

Efficiency and peak performance are non-negotiable for mission critical data centers.

Multiple chillers or pumps may be installed to deliver redundant operation in the event of a shut down or maintenance of the cooling system. But the existence of redundant equipment doesn’t guarantee efficient operation. One or two chillers often handle the bulk of the workload, creating a strain on the entire system.

With the right technical expertise and programming, intelligent staging can satisfy this challenge.

When the system is programmed to automatically divert the workload to the chiller that has operated the least, failures, downtime and maintenance are reduced. System heat loads can also be diverted to designated chillers to further manage energy reductions. The result is improved efficiency and performance system-wide and greater peace of mind.

Simulation and Testing

Simulation and Testing

New construction of data centers are complex environments, requiring significant coordination between trades.

Start-up and commissioning are critical path activities that highlight errors in installation, configuration, or programming. Start-up and commissioning failures lead to delays and the potential for existing systems to go off-line.

Simulation and testing capabilities move configuring, startup and commissioning to an advanced state and mitigate risks that delay or affect uptime performance.

In a simulated environment, instrumentation and control configuration is brought to life and the configuration plan carefully mapped to account for every step. Entire systems are taken through full commissioning scripts in a simulation environment before they ever reach the site. The ability to visualize and account for challenges during the simulation delivers a more streamlined and successful implementation.

Layered Redundancy with Software

Layered Redundancy with Software

100% up-time is the requirement of data center facility performance.

However, failures do occur, even within facilities that have the best preventative maintenance. Data centers are designed with redundant physical equipment and sensors to allow for active failures in the operating environment without affecting uptime performance. Errors in the complex facility control software create an environment that is unpredictable, unstable, or even worse, not redundant. It can also be cost prohibitive to install additional sensors throughout a plant, and oftentimes critical sensors are installed without a physical backup.

Adding a necessary layer of redundancy through the DeltaV software is achieved by distributing and coordinating control for redundant equipment across multiple controllers.

Implementing controller diagnostics and sensing system process conditions fully utilizes the redundant equipment. The addition of these virtual sensors acting as a backup to physical sensors create redundancy and serve as a way to cross-check system performance.
